The situation follows three bars, each with five tiers:
- Slave Supply: slaves in the Sultan’s market against what it can hold, bought on the Black Sea and in Constantinople. A short supply makes the army dearer to keep.
- Royal Mamluks: the Sultan’s own regiments against 10,000 men. His legitimacy stems from the army: a weak corps drains legitimacy and crown power.
- Khushdashiyya: the households’ cohesion, the mamluk estate’s satisfaction. Strife costs stability and political influence.
Around the bars sit a new mamluk estate, a succession law in which only the Great Emirs can rule, and the decision every new sultan faced: what to do with his predecessor’s mamluks.
